Types of Contracts and Agreements
Agreement Sponsors
1. Federal/State Sponsored Agreements - These
agreements may be either competitive or non-competitive.
In either situation, extensive knowledge of Federal sponsor
pre- and post-award requirements is needed. Inadequate
compliance with pre-award requirements may make the
application non-responsive in the eyes of the federal/state
agency and they will not consider it further. Inadequate
compliance with post-award requirements may put the
investigator and the university in a position of default and
possible debarment. Serious ramifications exist that include
inability of the investigator and the university to obtain
future agreements for a period of several years.
2. For-Profit Sponsored Agreements - These agreements
may be awarded on a competitive or non-competitive basis.
Applicability of compliance issues (e.g., human subjects
protection) varies upon the purpose of the funded project,
and the sponsor; e.g.: a small study to look at the
effectiveness of a drug on a cell line will not be reviewed as
stringently as the use of a new drug on a pediatric patient
population.
3. Non-Profit Sponsored Agreements - These agreements
may also be awarded on a competitive or non-competitive
basis. Again, compliance issues vary with the project and
sponsor.
