Completion of this form is mandated by the UNC General Administration (UNC-GA) and the information collected is transmitted to UNC-GA.
The form is in two parts. The upper part requests that you classify both the activity area and the disciplinary area of your proposal. The activity area of your proposal (e.g., research, instruction, etc.) should be classified using the 2-digit codes of CHESS taxonomy or classification system. Please designate a primary CHESS activity. You may also designate an optional secondary CHESS activity as well.
The academic discipline of the proposal should be classified using the 6-digit CIP classification. To determine the appropriate CIP classification, it is usually quickest to first determine the general disciplinary area and then "link" to the more specific classification. Please designate a primary 6-digit CIP discipline code. You may also designate a secondary CIP 6-digit code.
Please feel free to use the "other" codes for CHESS and CIP if your proposal does not readily fit into the existing activities or disciplines.
The lower part of the form is mandated by the North Carolina legislature as part of their Performance Based Budgeting (PBB) initiative. Please read the instructions for this section on the form and mark each item that applies to your proposal, i.e., does your proposal provide a linkage with and/or benefit to North Carolina, or involves a collaboration/multidisciplinary activity. Interpret the questions broadly, i.e., be inclusive rather than exclusive in your answers.
